Currently, data storage media has been experiencing rapid development. Starting from the era of manual, analog, up to digital. Maybe you know some of the storage media such as tapes and floppy disks. If the tapes are usually reserved for audio storage, but a floppy disk typically reserved for a data or file, but still in a small capacity.

Now, data storage media increasingly diverse and sophisticated. With a small physical size, data storage media like memory card and flash disk is able to accommodate large capacities of data. We also recognize the disc that also serves to store data.

We know the disk is currently using the optical technology is the Compact Disk (CD) and Digital Versatile Disk (DVD). Both have the same form as the disc-shaped. The difference only lies in its capacity. CD only has a capacity of 700 MB, while the DVD has an average capacity of 4.75 GB.

If you've seen on the disk, writing CD/DVD +R, CD/DVD -R, or when you want to buy a disk, you will be given the option to buy the type of CD/DVD RW? Do not be confused, here are some brief explanations about the various disks.

1. CD/DVD ROM
CD/DVD ROM is one of a variety of the most common disk. ROM means Read Only Memory. Read Only meaning can only be read. CD/DVD can not be written or added data, and also the data can not be removed.

DVD ROM has several different types of storage capacity, namely:
  • DVD-5: has a single sided and single layer and a capacity of 4.37 GB.
  • DVD-9: has a single sided and dual layer and a capacity of 7.95 GB.
  • DVD-10: has a double sided single layer and with a capacity of 8.74 GB.
  • DVD-18: has a double sided dual layer and with a capacity of 15.9 GB.

2. CD/DVD -R
Various kinds of the other disk is a sign of R on the disc. R means recordable. That is, this type of disk makes it possible to record data. The difference is the plus sign (+) and minus (-) in front of the letter R on the disk. Either CD or DVD, -R means it can only be used once, or so-called single session. That is, the disk can not be used to add data if it is used. The most common type of this disk, and the most widely used by peoples, so it's easy to get a dvd writer for this type of disk.

3. CD/DVD + R
If -R is a single session, then +R is a multi session. +R sign means that the disk can be re-used if there is space, or space left on the disk is already in use. This session can be used in either new or just adding a session on an existing session. For DVD, +R type has advantages in terms of speed. However, not all DVD driver already supports this format.

4. CD / DVD RW.
RW means the re-writable. Basically, this type of disk, either CD or DVD has the function of the data can be erased and rewritten. That is, the deleted data will make the disk space became empty again, and can be used again for other data to fill a new one. However, the number of re-writable is also limited. On DVD RW, can be up to 1000 times. The price of this disk is also more expensive, and DVD +RW is usually used for video recording needs.

5. DVD RAM.
DVD RAM is DVD Random Access Memory, like DVD RW, DVD can be used multiple times. Its capacity is also almost the same as the regular DVD is 4.7 GB up to 9.4 GB. However, DVD RAM are not popular because not all drivers can read them.
